6 Days Machame Route | Kilimanjaro Climb

The 6 Days Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers diverse landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and a rewarding challenge for adventurous hikers.

Climb Overview

The route takes you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and up to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. With experienced guides, full support crew, and carefully planned camps, the Machame Route delivers a safe, well-paced, and unforgettable Kilimanjaro summit experience.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)

After breakfast, you’ll drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate for registration and briefing. The trek begins through lush rainforest filled with towering trees, birds, and colobus monkeys. The trail can be muddy, but the scenery is rich and rewarding. You’ll arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon, where dinner and overnight rest await.

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) – Shira Camp (3,840m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steadily into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes sparse, and views of Kibo Peak start to open up. This is a shorter but steeper day, allowing time to acclimatize upon arrival at Shira Camp, located on the Shira Plateau.

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This is a key acclimatization day. You’ll hike uphill to Lava Tower, reaching over 4,600m, where you’ll stop for lunch and acclimatization. Afterward, you descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant senecios and stunning cliffs. The day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

The day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a hands-on scramble with incredible views. The trail then traverses ridges and valleys before reaching Barafu Camp, the final base camp before summit night. You’ll rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the summit push.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Around midnight, you’ll begin the challenging ascent to the summit. Trekking under the stars, you’ll reach Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend carefully back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,080m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

After breakfast, you descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. From here, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
