7 Days Rongai Route | Kilimanjaro Climb

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the northern side, near the Kenyan border.

Climb Overview

It’s quieter, more remote, and ideal for climbers seeking a less crowded trail with excellent scenery. The route offers a gentle ascent, good acclimatization, and a high summit success rate, descending via the Marangu Route.

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate – Simba Camp

After registration at Nalemoru Gate, the trek begins through farmland and pine forest. The trail gradually climbs into moorland, offering chances to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

The hike continues with a steady ascent and wide views of the Kenyan plains. Vegetation becomes sparse as you move higher, and the pace allows good acclimatization.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp

Today’s trek is shorter but steeper. You leave the main trail and climb toward Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley with stunning mountain views.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A morning climb leads into the alpine desert zone. The trail becomes steeper as you reach Mawenzi Tarn, set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak—one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

You cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The walk is long but gradual, preparing you for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest are essential.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Around midnight, begin the summit push to Gilman’s Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa. After photos, descend via the Marangu Route to Horombo Hut.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate

A gentle descent through moorland and rainforest leads to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel.
